TENNERGIE - Horizon 2025

A winning move for green energy!

"A winning move for green energy" sums it all up in a single sentence. The Tennis Club de Nyon has decided to become eco-responsible by switching to green energy and becoming one of Switzerland's first 100% renewable energy clubs!

It's an ambitious and innovative project, with the aim of achieving the TCN's energy transition by 2025.

Phase 1 of Tennergie was completed in record time, with the heating system overhauled, the hall completely renovated and more than 800 photovoltaic panels installed!

Here's a look back...

Tennergie stage 2: members say YES!

Tennergie stage 2 was approved by a large majority of members at the Annual General Meeting on 30 November 2022.

Many thanks to all those who took part!

Work on the Halle is scheduled to start on 17 April 2023.

Three goals

The municipality of Nyon, our ally

The municipality of Nyon is encouraging us to implement the TENNERGIE project. It has undertaken to finance our switch to geothermal energy for the Club House and the Halle. TCN will also benefit from long-term support from the municipality for pellet heating in the Bulle.

The Tennergie project will be carried out in three stages:

  • 1. La Bulle - autumn 2022

La Bulle is now heated with pellets (replacing gas*), a 100% renewable energy source with a neutral carbon footprint. New LED lighting and automated temperature control have also been installed to reduce our energy consumption.

These changes have had very beneficial consequences for the club:

    • Pellets are cheaper than gas and 100% local (SA Rueyres sawmill, VD). The municipality is also providing us with long-term support; if we have to pay for the rental of the boilers initially, the town will rent us its boilers free of charge in a second phase.
    • The new lighting system will reduce our electricity consumption by 50% and improve light levels. Thanks to this system, which will soon be directly connected to the Plug in reservation system, unused courts will no longer be able to be switched on.
    • Automated temperature control will also save money. We've lowered the ambient temperature in the bubble by a few degrees. Knowing that 1 degree less corresponds to a 6% energy saving, this is an essential measure in the current climate.

*Initially, the option of heating the bubble with gas will be retained. However, it will be reserved for very cold periods, when the full power of the pellet boiler is no longer sufficient. We hope, of course, that this will happen as infrequently as possible.

  • 2. La Halle - summer 2023

The hall was built in 1982 and is now showing signs of wear and tear, including recent water leaks. The building is therefore becoming outdated and poorly insulated.

This second stage of the project involved :

    • Redoing the roof and insulating the hall: insulation now saves 60% of the hall's heating costs !
    • Installing solar panels: we are now producing green electricity for our own consumption and can feed the surplus back into the grid. The panels are managed under a contract with Romande Energie, which means that the solar power plant belongs to this company. The installation, management and maintenance of the panels are managed and financed by Romande Energie. So the TCN didn't have to invest anything!
    • The charging points for electric vehicles were installed and successfully commissioned in July 2024.
  • 3. The Club House - 2025

The Club House is also in need of renovation. The ‘sick’ concrete (carbonation of the concrete) needs to be cleaned up. At the same time, the Club House is to be completely insulated. As with the Hall, insulating the Club House  will result in energy savings of 60% !

Thanks to our partnership with Espaces Verts, we will be switching to geothermal energy (replacing fuel oil), a green energy source, for the Club House and the Hall. The heat pump will be, as it's known in the trade, ‘reversible’, so it will be possible to cool the Hall in summer!

The advantages

Is now the right time ?

Yes, it's even the best time to initiate this energy transition:

Une rangée de panneaux solaires au sommet d'un bâtiment avec le soleil qui brille à travers eux.
  • The price of gas, heating oil and electricity has recently rocketed.

  • According to the experts, insulating buildings will become compulsory in a few years' time. As soon as insulation becomes compulsory, no more subsidies (financial aid granted by the State) will be issued.

  • Our roof, built over 40 years ago, contains asbestos (a substance that is harmful to health). Although it does not represent a health hazard at the moment, it will have to be redone at the first crack, with or without the Tennergie project.

  • We now have a unique offer from the municipality of Nyon.

  • The law on carbon neutrality by 2050 has come into force in Switzerland. If insulating and switching to green energy is now a moral duty, it will soon become a legal obligation. Let's anticipate the coming changes!

  • It's time to be part of the solution and take action for the future of our young people.

What about financing?

Despite the more than attractive offer from the municipality of Nyon, without financing, TCN will have to borrow money from the bank. While this may seem the most obvious solution, it will have an impact on our annual budget. We are therefore looking at alternative solutions; it is clear that we will not refuse any donations!

The members said
YES to stage 2 of the project at the General Meeting in November 2022!

One thing is certain: the Committee is convinced of the relevance of this project. It's OUR contribution to a healthier environment. This is THE time to get involved!
